GROUP RIDING TECHNIQUES

WHEN A GROUP OF WINGERS SET OUT TO DISCOVER NEW ROUTES TO PLACES OF INTEREST,THE FOLLOWING SHOULD BE OBSERVED TO MAKE THE JOURNEY SAFER.

THE LEADER WILL TRAVEL TOWARDS THE CENTRE OF THE ROAD BUT NOT CLOSE TO THE WHITE LINE.

THE SECOND RIDER WILL TRAVEL ONE SECOND BEHIND BUT TO THE LEFT OF THE CENTRE OF THE LANE, BUT NOT NEXT TO THE KERB.

THE THIRD AND SUSEQUENT RIDERS WILL TRAVEL ALTERNATE POSITIONS ON THE ROAD TO ENABLE SAFE BRAKING AND ACCELERATION AND TO AVOID ANY COLLISION WITH THE VEHICLE IN FRONT.

THIS ALSO ENSURES THAT THE SECOND RIDER DOES NOT FOLLOW THE SAME LINE AS THE LEADER THROUGH ANY SLIPPERY PATCHES PETROL,DIESEL,OIL,ETC,OR HOLES IN THE ROAD SURFACE.

THIS POSITION WILL ALLOW THE RIDER TO VIEW THE ROAD IN FRONT IF HE/SHE IS NOT DIRECTLY BEHIND THE FRONT VEHICLE.

AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS OR JUNCTIONS THE SECOND MACHINE WILL CLOSE UP THE GAP, PULL UP STATIONARY ALONGSIDE THE LEADER. THIS ALLOWS THE GROUP TO TAKE UP LESS SPACE AT JUCTIONS ETC. AND ENABLES EASY PROGRESS WHEN THE ROAD IS CLEAR.

WHEN TRAVELLING WITHIN A CONVOY OF WINGS AT A TREFFEN OR AT A WING DING, PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOU TAKE UP THE CORRECT POSITION AS MENTIONED ABOVE.

THERE ARE EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE, WHEN BEING OVERTAKEN BY MARSHALLS OR POLICE ENROUTE, WHEN THE OUTSIDE RIDER (NEAREST THE WHITE LINE) SHOULD PULL ACROSS TO THE NEAR SIDE TO ALLOW OVERTAKING AND THEN RETURN TO HIS/HER ORIGINAL LINE.

IT DOES NOT MAKE GOOD ROAD CRAFT TO MOVE FROM ONE POSITION IN THE CONVOY TO ANOTHER AND INTERRUPT THE FLOW OF THE CONVOY.

RIDERS OVERTAKING AT HIGH SPEED WHEN THEY SHOULD REMAIN WITHIN THE GROUP-RIDING SITUATION CAN CAUSE ACCIDENTS.
